YappyPaste
Push-to-talk dictation for Mac

Hold a key.
Yap.
It's pasted.

YappyPaste turns Option-Space into a talk button. Speak, release, and your words are typed into whatever app you're in. Runs on your Mac. No account, no cloud, no monthly bill.

YappyPaste dictating into an email on a Mac: the floating panel shows live text while the Option-Space key is held

Talk to type on your Mac, in three moves

Hold ⌥ Space

Or any key you choose. A small panel appears with a live waveform. Tap instead of hold to lock recording on for a long dictation.

Say it

Words appear as you speak with Apple's on-device engine, or use the local Whisper model when accuracy matters more than speed.

Let go

The text is typed at your cursor in Mail, Notes, Slack, Cursor, ChatGPT, Word, anywhere. Or it lands on the clipboard, your choice.

Nothing leaves your Mac

Two speech-to-text engines, both running on your hardware.

Apple Speech is on-device and instant, with words appearing as you speak. Whisper Large v3 Turbo is a local model for higher accuracy: one 630 MB download, then it works with the network off. If Whisper is still downloading, YappyPaste quietly uses Apple Speech so you're never stuck.

No account. No server. No screenshots of your screen. The only network request the app ever makes is that optional model download.

A voice dictation app that behaves like a Mac utility

Every app, one key

A global hotkey works system-wide. Type into the focused field, or copy to the clipboard and ⌘V. Both at once if you like.

Fix it before it lands

Review and edit the transcript in the panel before it's pasted. Nothing goes out that you didn't approve.

Every yap, saved

A searchable history of everything you've dictated. A clipboard history for your voice.

Menu bar, not a window

Lives in the menu bar and stays out of the way. The panel shows up where you want it and disappears when you're done.

Built for prompts too

Dictate into Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude or a terminal. Speaking a 200-word prompt beats typing it.

Hold or toggle

Hold to talk and release to paste, or classic press-to-start, press-to-stop. Your stop key is configurable as well.

What YappyPaste doesn't do

We'd rather you know before you buy.

  • English first. English is the tested language at launch. Whisper understands many more; we'll list each one once we've verified it.
  • No AI rewrite. YappyPaste types what you said, not what a model thinks you meant. If you want filler words removed automatically, we're not there yet.
  • Mac only, Apple silicon recommended. Whisper runs on Intel Macs but it's slow there. Apple Speech is fine on both.
  • One 630 MB download if you switch on Whisper. Once.

Questions

Is YappyPaste a subscription?

No. It's a one-time purchase of $19.99 on the Mac App Store. No tiers, no in-app purchases, no account.

Does my voice leave my Mac?

No. Apple Speech runs on-device and Whisper runs locally after a one-time download. There is no YappyPaste server. See the privacy policy.

Which apps does it work in?

Any app with a text field. Text is typed at the cursor (with the Accessibility permission) or copied to the clipboard (no permission needed).

Which languages are supported?

English at launch. Whisper understands many more; we'll list them as we verify each one.

How is this different from the built-in Mac dictation?

Apple's dictation is free and good. YappyPaste adds a hold-to-talk key that works the same in every app, a panel to fix the text before it lands, a searchable history, and a local Whisper model for harder audio.

Can I try it first?

There's no trial. Apple's refund process applies if it isn't for you. We'd rather keep one price than run a trial clock.
